"SBLC
has provided literacy instruction to over 800 individuals to date."
Like our volunteers, our learners come from all walks of life, and many
are referred to us by other community agencies, by their employers and by
friends. Some want to learn to read and write, others want to improve their
skills. Others come from other countries, and want to learn English. Still
others want to work on very specific goals, such as learning to read the
Bible, or obtaining an Alabama Driver’s permit.
Each learner’s goals are taken into consideration and each is evaluated
in order to place him or her in an appropriate curriculum. A tutor is
assigned to each learner, and SBLC assists the learner/tutor team in finding
an appropriate place to meet. It is recommended that the learner and tutor
meet for about 2 hours, twice a week.
Both tutors and students have access to an extensive library of
supplementary audio, video and written materials. The Council has also
published an illustrated version of the Alabama Driver’s Manual for low
level readers, as well as an audio tape. A computer lab with a variety of
software is also available for use by both tutors and students.
In the High Challenge program, students are referred to SBLC by the high
school principal or counselor. An individualized course of instruction is
set up for each student, and tutoring takes place once or twice a week,
usually after school hours in the High School library.
