Learn to Read

SBLC offers individualized instruction in basic reading and writing, at all levels. Once the learner has reached an 8th grade level, tutoring can continue in order to prepare him or her to take the GED (General Education, or high school equivalency, Diploma).

English for Speakers of Other Languages

Tutoring is also available to speakers of other languages wanting to learn English. We have a wide variety of ESOL students: some have earned college degrees in their native country; others  cannot read and write in their native language; and others' language skills are somewhere between these two extremes.

High Challenge

SBLC offers High Challenge, a tutoring program for high school seniors who are in danger of failing their final try of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. Results have been encouraging: most of the seniors receiving tutoring during the first year of the program were able to graduate with their peers.
